Hypnosis Everyday

Have you wondered whether or not you could be placed in hypnosis? There’s no real answer, because rather than being a distinct state, hypnosis is more of a variable process that you enter into most of the time. And here’s your first secret – it happens all day, every day.

Hypnotic effects all occur naturally without any ‘induction’ process.

Small Examples:

  • Forgetting where you put something, looking all over the house and finding them right in front of you (or in your hand) (Negative hallucination – not seeing something that is there)
  • Forgetting someone’s name that you know you know (amnesia)
  • Cutting or injuring yourself, and not realising until later (anaesthesia)
  • Spotting someone you have just been thinking about, to find that they are actually someone completely different (positive hallucination – seeing something that isn’t there)
  • Driving a long way and not remembering much about it (amnesia, internal attention)
  • Being focussed on the TV and not hearing someone talking to you (diverted attention)

All day, you drift into different states of awareness and attention. Some actions are more automatic than others. You don't think about how to make a cup of tea, but you do if you drop the mug on the floor. One moment you’re day dreaming in a reverie, the next you are completely alert.

But these are ideas that you should already be familiar with. They break you into the idea that a lot of behaviours could be classified as hypnotic.

Suggestion

If the subconscious feels compelled to do something, the conscious mind will 'invent' reasons to justify it. It is an inbuilt mechanism to make us feel consistent with our actions. The subconscious can compel us to do things all the time, and we don't realise because subconsciously, we agree with whatever it wants to do.

A suggestion can easily influence our subconscious, to make us feel compelled to do, think or feel a particular thing. Because of the mechanism of consistency, you may consciously justify doing it. The strange thing, is that despite how irrelevant the suggestion is, you would believe what you were saying to justify it, regardless of how creative or imaginative the reason was.

For example, a man as part of a stage hypnosis act is told to pick up his chair upon waking. He is not aware that this suggestion has been given. When asked as to why he did this, he may respond 'I just wanted to see how heavy it was', or 'I am looking for something'. He probably absolutely believes, consciously, that this is the real reason. But we know different, that he was compelled to do it because the suggestion was firmly planted in his subconscious. The implications of this for ordinary behaviour are extraordinary. Despite our reasoning, how do we know if something is coming from our conscious, or subconscious minds?

In normal life, the same process of compulsive behaviour patterns occur all the time. They are developed through subconscious associations and influential suggestions. People consciously explain behaviours as if they are choosing them, when in fact they may be subconscious compulsions. And they are indicated, just as with phobias, by things that clearly don't make sense. We all do it. What's really interesting is realising how subconsciously determined most of our behaviours really are. It's a very difficult thing to grasp, because when you start considering it, a lot of things that are taken for granted or assumed about behaviour begin to unravel.

The great thing about compulsive behaviour generated by the subconscious is that it can be used to your advantage. How about being compulsively positive, or compulsively successful? Perhaps a compulsion to not smoke, or to be confident? This is where the hypnotic suggestions of directed hypnotherapy can be extremely beneficial. It seems to make sense to program your subconscious in a way that suits you, rather than let everything else in the world do it for you!

So who are you, really?

You may identify yourself with what you do, what you own, how much money you have, who you know, where you’ve been, perhaps even what you think or look like. But are any of these really who you are? Have you ever stopped to think about why you do the things you do or have gotten to where you are right now?

For example, how much are you influenced by:

  • Your individual experiences and the behaviour patterns they gave you – events that made you feel good, bad, powerful, scared or ashamed?
  • The associations that people taught you – that may not have even been right (e.g. the world is a safe and fair place? Be seen and not heard? You should obey authority?)
  • The expectations of others – shaping you into being what they want you to be, and not how you feel you are? When you feel like you are developing as a person, do you find no one notices and you slip back to old habits?
  • The suggestions and associations that surround you – adverts, media, trends, soaps, all telling you what to do, wear, buy, believe, even how to argue or talk?
  • Your own attitudes – do they really belong to you, or did you learn them from friends, family, the media, or even isolated incidents that were really one-offs?

You may then start to wonder – who would you be if those experiences were different? Would you really be exactly the same?

Mental Programming

Our level of suggestibility to outside influence is highest at times when we aren't in a good position to judge or evaluate things. This would include periods of extreme tiredness, being out of our comfort zones, the whole of infancy, or living in todays world. During these times, many suggestions, ideas, thoughts or attitudes can 'sink in', from friends, magazines, parents, teachers, politicians, outside influences etc. You could think of your mind as being like a computer, installed with software by everyone and everything except you!

Computers - like our minds?Associations run through our subconscious minds in ways we aren't always consciously aware of. Suggestions can often be felt in exactly the same way as they were learned, whether positive or negative. For example, how often do you feel 'I can't do that' or 'I'm not good enough' when you want to do something, but feel discouraged. You know it's the conscious consistency thing going on again, because logically, you know that you could do it! Replace that talk with 'I can do it'. Sometimes in hypnotherapy, someone's limiting behaviour, attitude or anxiety often comes down to a particular assumption or piece of self-talk, running over and over like a computer program. When it's 'deleted' or substituted for something more powerful and constructive, the positive effects are obvious.

The analogy of computers may seem a little corny, but you get the idea. To continue with it, you could think about your conscious awareness as being like a computer screen, only showing what is running at any one time. Everything else runs in the background.

Hypnotherapy is like going into the system, analysing what is there, and doing a clean up by carrying out particular actions that the user wants. It can be extremely rewarding to be aware of the programming that controls and influences most of our behaviours. When I first started to experience hypnosis in training, I was amazed at the things that came to mind. They are things that only make sense once they’re realised and the effects are felt.

programming your own mindThe main idea I want to get across to you now is that we don’t always choose the programs that end up running our attitudes, beliefs, thoughts and behaviours. Not until we choose to choose them. Then, you get to choose who you are, instead of the outside world choosing for you.

Hypnotic Learning

Hypnosis could be defined as something that enters the subconscious, without conscious intervention or awareness. For example, you could consciously learn a phone number. You could also subconsciously learn one that was repeated on a commercial, that you didn’t intend to learn. The fact that the commercial phone number went into your subconscious without you even realising is a process like hypnosis.

If that can happen with a phone number, what do you think will happen with the comments or suggestions that people make? It is no surprise that people who surround themselves with grumpy, negative and self-centred people end up being the same way. Comments like ‘what’s the point’, ‘you can’t trust no one’, ‘you wont get anywhere’ etc eventually end up in your subconscious. Similarly people who answer ‘how are you?’ with ‘not bad’ limit themselves to not feeling good either. Again the same system of suggestion can be used for positive ends. Being positive around friends could easily lift them out of a slump. If you have a friend who is feeling a bit down or bluesy, try this little suggestion. Ask them to remind you of something that you know they enjoy a lot, whether it is something they do regularly, or something recent like a holiday. In telling you about it, they will likely summon all of the feelings and associations that go with the thought or memory, and these will gradually flood out the negative self-talk.

But if you find people are constantly bringing you down with negative talk, useless cynical comments about other people, the weather, the boss, or themselves, be careful how you respond. Always agreeing with such things can seriously affect your own attitudes, feelings and beliefs. The things we believe about each other are incredibly powerful in shaping behaviour. They are like self-fulfilling prophecies. If you think about it, this could also be used to work for you instead of against.

Beliefs

A lot of our behaviour is shaped by what we believe. Beliefs can come from all sorts of places, whether peoples attitudes, hypnotic learnings or ways to justify certain behaviours (e.g. someone who is depressed may ‘believe’ that there is nothing good in the world).

Whilst essential in life, it is also important to recognise the limitations of beliefs. Every belief by nature assumes something, which then limits the possibilities of the opposite. For example, a depressed person who believes there is no good in the world, limits themselves to the possibility that there is. Someone who believes that all people in suits are trustworthy limit their vigilance in recognising the shrewd door-to-door salesman. Believing anything limits the possibility of the opposite.

When people have personal limitations, whether it is lack of patience or understanding in relationships, aggressive tendencies at work, or self-doubt, there is usually an underlying belief that makes it so. For example, self-doubt is usually caused by a belief along the lines of ‘I am no good’. A smoking habit could be backed up with a belief that they couldn’t quit, or that it would be painful. That belief probably wasn’t chosen, but was ‘given’ by a situation, expectation or attitude.

Isn’t it amazing to think how our lives could be affected by deep down beliefs that we didn’t even want? But they are extremely powerful.

Of course, you may argue that all of this nonsense is my belief, and that I am limiting myself to the possibility that we are all actually very consciously aware and have a lot of self control. I would respect that (but secretly be wondering why we aren’t all happier, more successful, and free of fears and addictions?)

Hypnotherapy

Most underlying attitudes, beliefs, expectations or assumptions can be explored and identified through hypnotherapy. It is amazing how often a personal limitation can be reduced to a simple expectation about something that was sat deep down in the subconscious. Once it’s realised, it is exposed to your conscious judgement where it can be thrown out, or replaced with something more worthwhile. Change doesn’t have to be a long process that takes years of talk. The simple, powerful moments in hypnotherapy of self-awareness and realisation can change beliefs, attitudes or expectations very rapidly.

But even hypnotherapy has its secrets.
